GiGo digital TV recorder

Digital Vision on Thursday announced the upcoming launch of its GiGo Digital TV Recorder, which allows users to record Freeview digital transmissions straight onto a USB thumb drive in MPEG2 format. There is no built-in hard drive, as with other DVR products, and the GiGo is meant to appeal to users who miss their VCR rather than avid home theater enthusiasts.

Instead of multiple tuners and an integrated hard drive, the GiGo box includes three USB slots, a single tuner and an electronic program guide. To appeal to the target user, operating and interfacing with the GiGo is made ultra-simple as well.

Digital Vision says it envisions GiGo used in kitchens and bedrooms rather than living rooms. Company reps cite easy portability of the files as an advantage, and says users can record to larger capacity external hard drives, with a 500GB drive connected without issues. While there is no Freeview+ functionality, users can record one program while watching a previously recorded one at the same time.

Digital Vision said it is working on releasing more advanced recorders, capable of MPEG4 recordings and with an internal drive.

The GiGo should cost the equivalent of $115 when it launches later this year. [via Pocket-lint]
