Portfolio Server 9 gains web client, Windows servers

updated 03:40 pm EDT, Tue June 30, 2009

Portfolio Server 9 ships

Extensis has released Portfolio Server 9, an upgraded backbone for its digital asset management suite. Groups using the software can more rapidly share media files across a network, while also handling tasks like file conversion, applying metadata, or tracking license and copyright restrictions. Server 9 incorporates a Flex-based web client, which duplicates functions of the dedicated client but with more freedom of movement.

Server architecture has been switched to a new Java base, and a scalable media processing engine is said to provide wide format support and fast file transfers. Administrators now have access to a web-based management tool, and support for Adobe software has been enhanced through adoption of the XMP Toolkit, and drag-and-drop compatibility in the Portfolio Express palette. Compatible server platforms have been upgraded to include Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server.

Portfolio Server 9 costs $6,050, with an additional $315 fee per client, whether web-based or not. Modules for web publishing or added SQL support cost another $6,050 each.
