Acer May Overtake Dell

Taiwanese PC builder Acer is poised to outpace Dell and get second place in PC industry market share, new insights show. The New York Times notes that Acer gained 3 percent world market share last year compared to a near-flat 0.1 percent for Dell and that the gap closed this past quarter to just 2 percent. The difference is attributed to a clearer focus on PCs than Dell as well as an emphasis on lower-cost systems and a much leaner inventory system that sees Acer worry less about stock.

The company is one of the few to benefit from the rise of netbooks and has ousted ASUS for the top spot in the category. As it focuses primarily on retail, it also doesn't have to consider limiting selection or pricing to avoid cannibalizing a direct sales business as with Dell or HP.

Acer is also edging out most other PC builders in planning to launch multiple smartphones this year. Dell has never produced a smartphone and is only poised to have a limited release of an Android-based model with an undetermined release date. HP currently has only two true modern smartphones and has struggled to get significant carrier deals.

    If I ran Dell

I would shut it down and give the money back to the stock holders.

    No wonder

Seriously, Dell hasn't done anything innovative and it's starting to show. Dell has been a me-too organization that has had Apple-envy for too long. It's time for them to think on their own if they want to remain successful.

So Apple's in the 5th or 6th spot, but that's OK because marketshare isn't important. But Dell might fall from 2 to 3 and it's the end of Dell.

Of course, they haven't fallen. And Acer focuses more on consumer machines and Dell on business, a market which has taken a hit recently. And they focus on the low-priced machines that everyone on MacNN declares is a market one doesn't want to be in. So all that marketshare and they could still be losing money.
