Garmin unveils touchscreen Dakota outdoor GPS

updated 08:10 am EDT, Fri June 26, 2009

Garmin Dakota 10 and 20

Garmin on Friday kicked off the launch of a new outdoors GPS line. The Dakota 10 and 20 are both ruggedized but small and built to to be simple with a touchscreen interface borrowed from the high-end Oregon line. It lacks the earlier model's camera but has 850MB of internal memory to handle both map data as well as waypoints and geocache data synced from a Mac or Windows PC.

The Dakota 10 is the basic model and depends on both internal memory alone and USB to store and transfer data. A trade up to the Dakota 20 adds a wireless link to share mapping data and geocaches with other Garmin outdoors devices. It also supplies a microSDHC card slot for extra measurement data, such as a barometric altimeter and a magnetometer-based compass that knows its bearings without needing to be level.

Either GPS comes with a worldwide terrain basemap and supports both more detailed terrain maps as well as Garmin's City Navigator NT maps for urban areas. The company doesn't yet have pricing or ship dates available.
