updated 09:15 pm EDT, Thu June 25, 2009

Playback 1.0 announced

Yazsoft has released its newest application, Playback, used to share media with any Playstation 3, Xbox 360, or UPnP compatible devices. The software boasts the ability to host almost any file type without any reconfiguring the original file and integrates with iTunes, iPhoto, and Aperture. User's can also control which devices have access to their media using the application's Access Control List tool. Playback also features Bandwidth throttling, used to limit the transfer rate from the computer to the UPnP device allowing the network to continue functioning without interruption.

The application utilizes Growl notifications, Spotlight based searching, thumbnails generated by QuickLook, and a Status menu that displays live stream information.

Playback requires Mac OS X 10.5 and a network connection to function. The application can be purchased from the Yazsoft online store for $15, which includes three licenses.

PS3 Media Server can handle MKVs and it's free!

    Thank you!

I have tried them all and they all SUCK ESP the FREE ones. Playback is, I think, the first true media server for Mac OS X that I consider worthy. It's very fast, and the developers seem to have thought of everything.

PS3 Media Server is a hack, looks like s***, and bogs up all the machine's resources. Playback barely hits 5% of CPU all full stream. Now THATS what I can designer coding! Well done!

    Medialink

I use Medialink to connect to the PS3, seems to work fine but has some trouble with playing HD TS files over the network.

An unfortunate grammar error right there in the summary on the main MacNN page.
