New HP desktop PCs

Computer builder HP has launched several new groupings of desktop PCs, which it says are timed to coincide with the beginning of the school shopping season. Updated options include the Pavilion Slimline s5000 series, which starts at $290 and consists of low-end hardware designed to fit in a half-sized tower case. The Pavilion p6000 systems are similarly low-end, but start at $270 as a result of using regular-sized components.

The Compaq Presario CQ5000 series currently consists only of the CQ5110F, which has a base price of $380. Basic specs are slightly improved, incorporating features like a 2.5GHz Athlon X2 processor and 3GB of RAM. Leading performance with the new machines are the Pavilion Elite e9000 systems; these begin at $600, and in higher configurations can be equipped with up to 12GB of DDR3 RAM, plus a Core i7 975 processor.

HP has also upgraded its TouchSmart PC software, which now incorporates the ability to stream Pandora Internet radio and burn music CDs. Existing editing and search functions for photo and video have been improved, and content can be now streamed to TouchSmart from any home server.
