Sony motion control tech

Sony Computer Entertainment has recently released more information on its upcoming motion control technology for the PlayStation 3 gaming console that it introduced at E3. The technology is due to launch in the spring of next year and include both first- and third-party content. The technology relies on the PlayStation Eye to track movements of a wand users hold, and Sony has revealed developers can already begin developing for it as the PS3 Software Development Kit (SDK) already includes face-tracking and head-tracking capabilities.

Sony also said the wand will include force feedback rumble, and up to four motion controllers can be tracked by the PlayStation Eye. The Eye's built-in microphone array will also allow for voice input and voice recognition. Using the controller will put an added strain on the PS3's processing abilities, however, as more memory and processing will be required to run the motion-tracking software.

The company is further exploring integration of the motion control wand with the existing controllers, perhaps allowing the wand to be used as a sword while the DualShock 3 acts as a shield.

Despite the added details, Sony did not reveal any pricing information, but does reiterate that it hopes to have the wand in use by spring 2010. [via Kotaku]
