iPhone 3G S sound problems
Some users of the iPhone 3G S -- launched last Friday -- are continuing to experience a serious sound issue, Apple support discussions reveal. After various sounds on the device are played, such as the effects for unlocking or text messaging, owners may encounter a high-pitched tone. The frequency of the tone is thought to be near 15KHz.
The tone may in fact be unnoticeable to some users, but those who can detect it may find it extremely irritating. It is believed however that the problem may be connected to software, due to the timing of the noise, and its sudden removal when a phone is set to use vibrating alerts. Apple has yet to acknowledge the problem, leaving a potential fix date uncertain.

The Newton used to do the same thing when you turned on backlighting, it had a high pitched little buzz. Not everyone noticed it.
