UPS holding onto iPhone 3GS shipments

updated 11:50 am EDT, Wed June 17, 2009

iPhone 3GS deliveries held

UPS is artificially delaying the delivery of iPhone 3GS shipments, multiple sources say. Although the first shipments technically began on Monday, UPS is reportedly telling customers that phones are being held "for a future delivery date." While a MacNN source has been told shipments are merely awaiting customs clearance, other sources have been informed that Apple has specifically requested holds without explanation.

Some shipments may in fact be deep into the US already, at least as far as Kentucky. The hold is likely to have been issued to prevent phones from arriving as soon as the 17th or 18th, rather than the official June 19th launch date. Early arrivals would defuse parts of Apple's intended PR strategy, and also potentially create problems with carriers, which may not be ready to support or charge for the 3GS.

    Delays

Mine came through Anchorage, AK and I assumed customs there, then made it's way to Louisville, KY where it is sitting for at least (and I hope only) today before heading to my house in Washington state. Seems like a rediculously long trip to go to Alaska, then Kentucky, then back to Washington. shrug

    2 complaints...

FIRST - Alaska is the US port receiving shipments from China?? SAY IT AINT SO! That's the same place with the crazy governor that believes she commands our nation's first response to foreign invasion from Russia? I'd feel a lot better if my brand new iPhone didn't have to touch Alaska soil.

SECOND - Shame on Apple for promising the 3.0 software update today and not having it out early morning California time! It should've been on iTunes servers 6am PT the latest. Promising to release any digital asset on a certain day shouldn't mean by the middle/end of that day - it should mean at the start of the day - I'd even argue 12:01 am if I wanted to be real picky.

    UPS

Louisville, Kentucky is the main hub for UPS in the United States, so it's not surprising they would make it there.

    UPS is holding them up

Yes, Alaska is the port of entry for commercial shipments from China. UPS's distribution point is in KY (go figure). BUT, Apple has apparently directed UPS to hold the shipments there for an un-determined time. Not real sure how they can do that since I've already paid for the item and it's addressed to me, but there it is. My iPhone has been in KY since late on 6-16. I paid for overnight shipping, yet Apple is directing UPS to ignore that. So, Apple, do I get a reimbursement for this shipping fee deal?

    Nothing Yet

I ordered mine on the 9th and have not received any kind of shipping notification. All I get from my order status is "Prepared for Shipment", "Priority" as the shipping method, and "delivers by June 19th".

Has everyone received shipping notifications? I'm wondering if the ones that received it ordered it before the 9th? Any on or after the 9th receive shipping notifications?

    I called ...

I called UPS with my tracking number and they told me:

    a. it is just undergoing its normal customs processing, and
    b. it is scheduled for delivery TOMORROW June 18th (even though a scheduled delivery date no longer appears on my tracking page.)

Now whether or not I believe them ...

    My package info...

Mine was ordered on 6/11 and the order status said "Delivers by Jun 19". Now that status just says "Shipped on Jun 17 via UPS". The UPS tracking information initially said a delivery date of 6/18. Now it's not showing a delivery date. The package has left Hong Kong at last update. Hopefully it arrives soon since my current phone has no working microphone and this is the replacement.

    Customs my a**

Yeah customs now takes place in KY, right.

I too question the legality of this. UPS offers the service for shippers to be able to change shipments but as the earlier post said, this item is bought, paid for, and shipped, so WTF?
