Opera Unite lets users share files via browser

Opera Unite eases sharing

Opera on Tuesday unveiled its Opera Unite service that breaks with tradition by allowing users to share files with other computer users via their web browsers and not a third-party server. Ease-of-use is being touted as an advantage of the new software, and Opera expects even devices with modern web browsers, such as smartphones, will also be able to access the files. As Opera Unite services are based on current open web standards, creating a full web service is said to be as easy as coding a web page.

Opera Unite is part of a special version of the Opera 10 desktop browser. The Opera Unite build and additional services for it can be downloaded from Opera's Unite site now, including file and photo sharing, acting as a web server and media player and a chat interface dubbed The Lounge. Users can also leave notes on each others' virtual "refrigerators." Files placed in shared folder on a user's computer and linked to the service can be accessed by other Opera Unite users without having to be uploaded first. Via the My Opera Unite home page, users can see which of their friends are using Opera Unite services.

Using open standards on the web such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript, developers can create their applications that use Opera Unite as well. Each of the services has a dedicated and direct web address assigned to it that contains a username and service name users need only to paste into their browser to access.

There is no mention of any security features built into the Opera Unite software, and any interested users are cautioned to share files only with those they trust.
