Samsung Omnia 2 for VZW

Samsung used its smartphone introductions today to reveal the Omnia 2 as Verizon's newest and most capable Windows Mobile device. The phone centers on a very large 3.7-inch, 800x480 AMOLED touchscreen that uses a new approach to resistive touchscreens, dubbed R Touch, that makes them more accurate and sensitive without having to use more advanced capacitive displays. Accordingly, it can both record and play back 480p video from its 5-megapixel camera without losing detail on screen.

The phone is also home to TouchWiz 2.0, a new version of Samsung's internally developed interface that supports a new 3D cube interface for more quickly reaching certain apps and media features. Some of the 2D interface also has a more 3D appearance. Opera's web browser is also included to supercede Internet Explorer.

Beyond these key features, the new Omnia should have 3G over EVDO, GPS and Wi-Fi. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 but has the performance to run Windows Mobile 6.5 through possible future upgrades. Verizon hasn't set out its own release dates and price, but a version of the Omnia 2 will also ship for GSM networks with HSPA-based 3G.
