iPgone 3GS gets GPU RAM

Specifications listed at the Netherlands T-Mobile website appear to confirm that the iPhone 3GS integrates 256MB of RAM. Developers will now be able to utilize double the memory from the previous 3G model. T-Mobile lists the expanded RAM on both the 16GB and 32GB models, although the basic 8GB variant likely still offers 128MB. The carrier also lists a 600MHz CPU, which could corroborate earlier reports that the device uses Samsung's ARM Cortex A8.

The new handsets reportedly integrate the PowerVR SGX graphics processor core, which enables support for OpenGL ES 2.0, according to AppleInsider. The System on a Chip (SoC) graphics components are allegedly being produced as a result of secret licensing agreements between Samsung, Imagination and Apple.

Along with the OpenGL ES 2.0 support, the GPU also provides a Universal Scalable Shader Engine for shader-based 3D graphics. The graphics drivers are said to eliminate any compatibility issues with the OpenGL 1.1 standard utilized by the iPhone 3G and iPod touch.

The general performance enhancements are expected to improve not only the use of third party apps, such as 3D games, but also the perceived speed of Internet access. Although the system will still be limited by the 3G data speeds, HTML rendering time should be reduced.

    So not...

So not just a refresh, but a complete internal overhaul. That's what i thought. I'll likely be getting not the next one after this, but the next one after that, because my current 3G phone is spectacular, and the 18 months i have to wait will be right around when apple drops the price on that one, or i might wait to see what's next. Depends on a few things, i guess we'll see.

Very cool though, happy or those who can get this new one with a new contract. Gives them some bragging rights to their pre using friends. ;)
