Sprint claims sales record with Palm Pre

updated 01:15 pm EDT, Tue June 9, 2009

High Palm Pre sales?

The weekend launch of the Palm Pre had produced a "record Sprint sales debut," the carrier claims. First-day and first-weekend records are said to have been surpassed by late Sunday, although Sprint has refused to disclose the exact number of Pres sold. The lack of data may be attributable to the short timeframe, although the company may also be worried about comparisons with AT&T and the Apple iPhone.

The Pre is directly targeted at the iPhone, and designed in part by ex-Apple employees. The phone is in fact said to hold some features superior to those of the iPhone 3GS, including multitasking, more comprehensive sync functions and a slide-out physical keyboard. Initial shipments of the Pre are believed to have been fairly light, possibly as a result of manufacturing problems and/or a desire to inflate demand.

    Setting the bar low...

I'm sure Sprint had record launch, but that really doesn't say much. When you set the bar that low (what was Sprint's previous record?), it's easy to beat it.

We'll probably wait for a few more days before the number begin trickling in. Most likely, it won't be much to write home about.
