SlingPlayer beta for Mac

Sling Media has released its beta version of SlingPlayer for Mac OS X. Zatz Not Funny notes that the beta SlingPlayer renders video recorded on the Slingbox attached to a users television, enabling streaming over the Internet. The beta is a web browser plug-in for Safari 3 and Firefox 3, but it only works on Intel-based Macs. The software also only supports Slingbox Solo, Pro and Pro-HD models.

The software is similar to its sister iPhone application, which enabled only Wi-Fi streaming capabilities due to AT&T terms of service.

SlingPlayer requires Mac OS X 10.5 and is available from the Sling Media website for free.

"... but it only works on Intel-based Macs."

Man, I'm sure getting sick of hearing this.

And everyone said at the time of the Intel transistion "But with Universal Apps, you can make them for both PPC and Intel! So you PPC users, don't fret!"

But try to tell them "That's only if they decide to use the flag, and assuming there's no crufting cpu-specific code".

But you can't blame the developers. They're just following Apple's lead. With Snow Leopard, the PPC is dead to Apple, and that started last year, so developers are just going "OK, why bother".

as always...

For some programs, it is as easy as setting the flag... but for many, it's not. With the knowledgebase of PPC developers shrinking, it only makes sense that Windows-centric companies who choose to do MacOS versions of software would focus on Intel-only executables. Especially since Apple has been selling primarily Intel-exclusive machines for three years.

I'm pretty sure they're completely Intel-exclusive.
