Sony to let PSP Go buyers download UMD games

PSP Go UMD Good Will Plan

Sony today indicated that it would let new owners of its upcoming PSP Go download digital copies of games they already own on UMD. Hardware marketing director John Koller tells Gizmodo that Sony is developing a "good will" program which would be limited to either when the games or the PSP Go units were purchased. Koller likens it to Blu-ray's Portable Copy, which gives owners of the physical media a free second copy optimized for digital players.

The executive interprets the program as a logical necessity for the PSP's audience. As a significant minority of buyers are usually owners of previous models, the good will system is necessary for any of this group that would want to trade up from an earlier PSP model without losing access to their existing game libraries.

"We'll be unveiling that [program] soon [because] we actually think there's a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000," Koller says. "In the past, we've seen a 20-25% trade-up factor, and I assume that's going to be the case here. We've modeled that."

Whether or not the service will incur a charge isn't mentioned, although it's assumed the conversion would be free or at most incur a small fee.
