AT&T cuts BlackBerry Bold, Curve 8900 pricing

AT&T cuts BB phone prices

Wireless provider AT&T has quietly lowered its subsidized pricing of two BlackBerry handsets, the Curve 8900 and Bold. Despite being released just at the end of May by the provider, the price drop of the 8900 to $150 puts it on par with pricing at rival T-Mobile. It was reduced by $50 thanks to a larger mail-in rebate in the form of an AT&T promotion card.

At the same time, the several months-old Bold has had its price reduced by $100 via a mail-in rebate for the AT&T promotion card and now costs $200. The QWERTY keyboard-equipped Curve 8900 has built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, along with a 3.2-megapixel camera. The Bold adds 3G data network compatibility but has a lower-resolution 2-megapixel camera.

AT&T hasn't explained the cut but is believed to be doing so both to compete better against T-Mobile's Curve pricing as well as to make the Bold a better competitor against AT&T's own devices, like the iPhone.
