Qualcomm Draft N module

Qualcomm on Monday announced the upcoming launch of its 802.11n wireless local-area networking (WLAN) chip for portable electronics devices such as cell phones and MIDs, the WCN1312. The 7mm by 7mm device can support data transfer speeds as fast as 72Mbps. Built on 65nm CMOS technology, it contains a 2.4GHz 802.11n baseband processor, media-access controller, RF transceiver and other necessary hardware.

The chip supports at least Qualcomm's own BREW platform as well as Android and Windows Mobile. Qualcomm says the WCN1312 is the first mobile handset device to support both 1x1 and 1x2 dual-receive antenna configurations that aim to increase range and data throughput.

Samples of the WCN1312 will be sent out before month's end, with volume production expected during the fall season.
