Adobe NVIDIA Team on Flash

Adobe and NVIDIA on Tuesday said they would work together to enable GPU acceleration in Flash. The approach will let at least NVIDIA's hardware take on the rendering for both animations and video, including H.264 footage. The efforts should scale from handhelds using NVIDIA's Tegra line up through to full-size desktop cards.

Neither company said when they expect GPU acceleration to become available or whether the acceleration will be limited only to NVIDIA parts.

The initiative is believed spurred on most by NVIDIA's efforts for Ion. Although the new feature makes smartphones with in-browser Flash more realistic, Ion is in particular need as many netbooks currently only receive acceleration for video by itself. Without Flash acceleration, the Intel Atom processors inside netbooks are often incapable of playing large Flash videos from Hulu, YouTube and other services.
