MBP service extended
Service has been extended for some older MacBook Pro models, an Apple support page reveals. In an article discussing problems with absent or distorted video, Apple notes that machines based on NVIDIA's GeForce 8600M GT may now be repaired for free up to three years after purchase, even if officially out of warranty. The latest the option should be available is September 2011.
Apple has blamed the graphics errors on NVIDIA, which in July of last year admitted that many 8400M and 8600M chipsets were suffering from heat failures. Although NVIDIA insisted that Macs would not be affected, complaints from users and an investigation by Apple ultimately proved otherwise. A publicly-driven lawsuit is currently underway; despite a problematic history, Apple has chosen to continue using GeForce chipsets in newer MacBook Pros.
