Verizon confirms Palm Pre, BB Storm sequel

updated 01:25 pm EDT, Thu May 28, 2009

Verizon Palm Pre Later

Verizon's wireless chief Lowell McAdam today undermined Sprint and stepped up smartphone competition by confirming that the carrier would get both the Palm Pre and a frequently rumored BlackBerry Storm sequel. The executive said during an online broadcast that he expects both within the "next six months;" he also suggested Android would come but didn't mention phones by name.

The news potentially hurts Sprint, which has been counting on its exclusivity for the Pre to halt the exodus of customers to other carriers, but is likely to be a significant advantage for Palm. The smartphone producer is under pressure to regain phone share as quickly as possible due to very low funds and would significantly improve its performance by adding the largest American carrier. Palm is also known to be working on the Eos, a Centro replacement that should reach most if not all US carriers later this year.

The Storm sequel is known to be a significant upgrade of the original with the controversial click-down screen removed and Wi-Fi added.

So the head of the competitor says he expects the Pre in six months. Gee, just what you'd expect them to say to try to drive another nail in Sprint's coffin (you know, wood can only hold so many nails...).
