Roxio VHS to DVD
Roxio is entering the increasingly crowded market of analog video converters for the Mac with the VHS to DVD kit. The package relies on five software screens to guide users through the process of copying from VHS, Hi8, Video8 and other analog sources. USB-based hardware is capable of capturing video in native MPEG-2 resolution; input jacks are provided for composite, stereo audio and SVHS connections, using either NTSC or PAL encoding.
The software illustrates how to hook up the cables, and provides an estimate of how much space is needed, based on the length of the video to be imported. Once captured, video can be exported to a bundled basic version of Toast 9, which handles burning. The video can also be sent directly to QuickTime or iMovie for editing, or conversion to other formats.
VHS to DVD requires a dual-processor G5 or Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.4, along with a free USB 2.0 port. The device is available online and from retailers for $80.
