SoftBank 8MP camera phones

Japanese carrier SoftBank has recently announced it will soon add the 934SH and 936SH handsets to its range, both manufactured by Sharp and meeting IPX5 and IPX7 waterproof specifications. The former also goes by Mirumo because it features a unique external LCD display developed by Sharp with a 456x240 resolution. Not quite e-paper, the display simply turns off the backlight and is said to use up 500 times less power than a conventional OLED display.

The Mirumo has an 8-megapixel camera with a CCD sensor from Sharp. Continuous autofocus, smile shutter, anti-vibration and auto scene selection as well as manual selection features are accounted for. It also sports a maximum light sensitivity of ISO 12,800, like the 933SH AQUOS Shot for capturing images in low-light conditions.

Otherwise, the phone has a 3-inch main display with an 854x480 resolution. microSDHC memory cards up to 16GB in capacity are supported. The tri-band GSM phone supports HSDPA 3G data networks and has infrared and Bluetooth short-range communications compatibility. The phone will play back 1Seg streaming TV and has mobile wallet functionality as well as a built-in web browser.

The 936SH, meantime, has a built-in solar panel on its rear panel that will charge the handset's battery, earning it the Solar Hybrid designation. A 10-minute call can be made after a dead battery is charged by the polycrystalline silicon panel for two hours. The solar panel can only recharge the battery to 75 percent of its capacity, with an AC adapter required to complete the charge.

Other specs of the 936SH are shared with the 934SH, including its 8-megapixel camera. There is no release date for the handset, though it will be offered in blue, white and green.

The 934SH will be available in black, white, pink and brown when it is launched in Japan at the start of September, though no pricing information is yet known. [via Impress]
