Nokia bows three budget e-mail phones

updated 07:25 am EDT, Mon May 18, 2009

Nokia 2720 2730 and 7020

Nokia on Monday rolled out three phones it sees as bringing e-mail to a budget audience. The 7020, as well as the other models, has built-in support for creating and running an Ovi Mail account without needing a PC. It specifically is designed as a fashion phone with a clamshell that lights up either when a message arrives or when the owner double-taps the display to check themselves. A 2-megapixel camera also comes stock.

Nokia has launched the 7020 well in advance and won't ship it until the fall for 90 Euros ($121) before carrier discounts. It's limited to EDGE for data but supports 850MHz and should therefore work within the US.

The 2730 classic is a designer candybar design that shares the 2-megapixel camera but adds basic 3G over WCDMA, including on the 850MHz band. Unusually, it hasn't received a price but should be ready for the summer. In turn, the 2720 fold is the least expensive of the group with a 1.3-megapixel camera in its mirror-effect flip design and dual-band EDGE that supports either 900MHz/1,800MHz for most areas or 850MHz/1,900MHz for North America. It arrives in the summer for 55 Euros ($74) before discounts.
