New HDMI connector could reach small devices

updated 01:10 pm EDT, Fri May 8, 2009

Small HDMI plug coming

A smaller, prototype HDMI connector, appropriately titled mini HDMI, may see its inclusion in future portable devices. Compared to a standard Type A HDMI connector that is 0.55in wide by 0.16in tall, the officially named Type D plug measures just 0.25in by 0.1in but retains the same 19-pin connection. Even compared to a micro USB plug, the Type D is slightly smaller as well and could therefore fit into cellphones and other devices that have the room.

While it's not confirmed, the new mini HDMI port may be included in the next revision of HDMI, due by the fall if not sooner. A smaller standard port could be used in small devices to bring both audio and video to TV sets or larger displays. Canon, among others, already uses a proprietary smaller HDMI connection in its HD-capable video cameras. Recent video-capable digital SLRs also regularly use custom, reduced HDMI connectors. lock for HDMI Type D?

They blundered when they released big HDMI connectors without locks. Many custom installers don't/won't use them because they get disconnected inadvertently. I hope they don't make the same mistake twice - or at least that they designed Type D not to come out under real-world-for-portables conditions.
