AMD refocuses resources

AMD late Wednesday announced intentions to move to a new operating model, in an effort to refocus resources on its struggling businesses. The announcement follows several other shifts in AMD's focus, specifically trying to improve integration between microprocessor and graphic processor development. The announced operating model organizes AMD into four operating teams: products, technology, marketing, and customers.

AMD had already split into two companies, with AMD itself only designing microprocessors while its GlobalFoundries spinoff would manufacture them. The split was unofficially attributed to the company's inability to compete with its largest opponent, Intel. AMD's sales this year were 21 percent lower than its sales in the same quarter of the previous year. When AMD reported its quarterly results in early March, its stock price had fallen 320 percent from its levels in March 2008 to just $2.09 per share.

AMD's switch to a new operating model is the latest attempt to move the company towards recovery, which has been helped by newer ATI graphics hardware as well as producing more modern processors such as the Phenom II.

    Kinda Feel Bad

Kinda feel bad I think Apple ended up helping Intel improve their image, to be honest I used to figure if I got a PC it'd be an AMD, now it would almost certainly be Intel. I hope they don't die though... competition is always important.

...and that.... why Apple initially went with intel, instead of AMD. Despite the hollering of the freetard fanbois, AMD has been in trouble for a long time, and Apple would have just traded in one set of headaches, for another.

This isn't taking away from AMD any of their engineering and innovation prowess, as they certainly innovated more and earlier - but Apple needed a reliable CPU / foundry partner, with a credible and reliable roadmap -- and THAT is what intel brought to the table.
