Radeon HD 4870 may suggest close 10.5.7 release

Video card hints at 10.5.7

A change in the availability of a card for Mac Pros could, by extension, signify an imminent release for Mac OS X 10.5.7. The Radeon HD 4870 upgrade kit has for a time been listed as taking weeks to ship. Only recently, however, the availability has been switched to a more practical 7 to 10 days.

Though the change could simply be attributable to better inventory or increased manufacturing, video card releases for the Mac are rare enough that Apple sometimes links availability with the release of major operating system updates. Mac OS X 10.5.7 is known to be accelerating in development, and could be released as soon as this week, just in time for a delivery of 4870s. The card remains compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.6.

    Huh?

10.5.7 was held-up for release of this card, yet card "remains compatible with 10.5.6"? Thanks for this riveting update.

Mine shipped yesterday from Memphis... hopefully will be here today. Maybe 10.5.7 will be out today as well :)

    Might want to wait

I just received my 4870 today. It took me a bit to install it, as I couldn't readily locate the power cable ports, which were difficult to access. At any rate, once I got the card up and running I was disappointed. It does not seem to be compatible with my Apple HD Cinema (23-in.)--there are no options available under the "Display" preferences panel and no means to re-calibrate the monitor. Also, the text seemed a bit gray. As for performance, I couldn't tell any difference. Then, I'm not a gamer. I've returned the unit to Apple. Maybe all works well using 10.5.7, but not so well with 10.5.6

    who cares

I'm surprised apple even shipped the card. Don't apple users tell me all the time that people who upgrade a computer are such a small minority it isn't even worth talking about?

    Fail

Got mine today... installed it... it will display on my 30" but can't do anything with it (no opengl, etc). It's obviously in a crippled state until 10.5.7 and drivers. :(

    Apple Called...

Apple pro-actively called me and stated that the cards were sent out early in error, and the software should be available shortly.
