Genius HD Cam Ships

Genius has announced its G-Shot HD520, a pocket-sized HD digital video camera it hopes will break price barriers for the class. The six-ounce camera features a 2.4-inch screen, records 11-megapixel stills and records in 5-megapixel MPEG 4/H.264 video that produces a 720p picture. The HD520 has some features reserved for higher-end cameras, such as facial detection and image stabilization, and its LCD screen rotates through 270 degrees.

The new camcorder has a built-in 32MB of memory, obviously requiring use of an additional SD card for any video capture; it supports up to 8GB SDHC cards for the bulk of its footage. The 520 uses a 7.1mm lens and offers a 5x digital zoom. It has an HDMI output for a direct connection to a HDTV. The HD520 is compatible with Mac OS X and Windows 2000/XP/Vista. It retails for $150.

    low light?

I'm not expecting much from a $150 HD video camera, but I'll be looking to see if this can handle low (by which I mean "indoor incandescent") light. I discovered the hard way that Flip and Kodak's HD portables just can't deal with something like the arrival of a birthday cake in a semi-darkened room without getting unacceptably blurry, noisy and generally awful.

    re: Low Light

Yeah, don't count on that. Look at the picture, and look at the size of the lens. It's smaller than the iPhone lens. And they claim 5MP video resolution.

I'm sorry, but that has to look like absolute c***. There is no magic here. This thing is just a piece of junk.

In fact, none of these cheap cameras (or even expensive ones) will give you good low light. If you want good low light, you'll need a nice 3-CCD camera, with a big sensor, and a big lens.

Remember the bigger the sensor, the more light it can capture. Of course optics are also important.

    5x digital zoom

It's a fixed lens that offers no optical zooming. It's going to be c*** in high def.

    Good point

Shawnde makes a good point. I own a Kodak Zi6 and think it commends itself well in most daylight situations. In fact, for the price point, it can't be beat on some levels. This is not the camera you want to have if you're making a video where stabilization and low light are an issue.

It is a little like a pocket camera vs. a DSLR. Of course, you'll get the better photos out of the DSLR, but try to slip it into a vest pocket at a party. Tool for the job is the general rule.

Still, despite the specs on this camcorder, it looks as cheaply made as the price is low.

I'd say you'd still be better off with a Kodak or Flip product vs. this offering. Yet, that is what reviews are for. Wait and see.

I've recently used my Canon HV30 HDV camcorder to shoot a wedding, and used a couple of old DV camcorders as backup coverage, to cover dropouts and bad camera moves (one was locked down on a wide shot), and for cutaway shots. But the SD footage looks lousy when inter-cut with the HD video. So I'm in the market for one or two inexpensive HD camcorders that I can use for those secondary purposes. I'll be checking for reviews on this one, because the price is right.
