Apple hits 1B app download

Apple on Thursday surpassed 1 billion App Store downloads, bringing an end to the recent sweepstakes. The user that downloaded the billionth app, or submitted a non-purchase entry at after the 999,999,999th app, will receive a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a $10,000 iTunes Gift Certificate. "Thanks a billion," Apple's main page reads. "Over 1 billion downloads in just nine months. Only on the App Store."

The rate of downloads has steadily increased since the App Store has opened, with the first 500 million apps downloaded in six months. The second 500 million has taken approximately half that time.

    Amazing

See what happens when you make remarkable products?

Their competitors could do a lot better than they are, but they have to take some risk, and they have to gauge the public, and they have to dream. They don't seem to want to do that--with them, it's all about market share. With Apple it's about making great products and NOT discounting.

See what happens when you restrict access to just your store?

And bearvin mind that this number includes downloads of free apps, re-downloads, and updates.

And I wonder if baby shaker was the billionth app.

I can't decide what you are getting at. Is Apple practically imprisoning it's customers the way they lock iPhone and Touch users into the iTunes store? Or are they a regular charity for giving away a billion free downloads?

    Make up your mind!

I'm pointing out that it's easier to get a lot more access to your site when you limit your customers to only get content from your site (as opposed to the iTMS, where people have choice of where to get their music).

Then I'm just pointing out for those who don't follow along closely that number of 'downloads' does not equate to 'number of sales' or 'number of unique downloads/sales', but includes free apps, updates to apps, and re-download of apps already downloaded.

Some people might confuse the 'downloads' as meaning 'purchases' and think apple has raked in over $300 million in sales alone.

It's the same as with the iTMS countdown, which included free downloads as well as purchases.

    Didn't mean to confuse you.

    haha!

And yet you're the one who spends all his/her time complaining about me, not even commenting on posts.

And it would be nice if your day care provider turned off internet access on you, but you can't get everything you want.
