Sony shows 21-inch OLED display, 3D tech in Japan

Sony OLED prototype, 3D

At the FPD Expo that wrapped up in Tokyo on Friday, Sony showed off a prototype 21-inch OLED display that is nearly twice the size of the current 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV. The new display has a greater 1366x758 resolution and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, like the XEL-1, in a package that is less than 0.4 inches thick. At the same time, Sony talked about distributing its 4K 3D digital projectors in more than 4,500 AMC theaters in North America.

While not all AMC theaters will have 3D movie playback capabilities, Sony's digital projectors, capable of displaying movies at 4096x2160 resolution, will be outfitted at all 4,628 screens at AMC theatres throughout North America. The use of digital projectors as opposed to current film units will mean a decrease in the cost of distributing content to the theatres, and in the theatres themselves as movies could be streamed through a network.

Sony believes movie theatre chains are slow not to switch to 3D projectors due to their high costs. The 3D glasses viewers must wear are reusable, but as the lens is scratched over use, quality degrades and the glasses or lenses must be replaced. Sony aims to help studios reduce costs by providing theatre chains with digital copies, instead of have them scan and digitize film in order to play it on their digital projectors. This process also degrades quality.

Sony also points to certain NBA, NFL and other major sports games being filmed in 3D, and while viewers do not have the hardware to receive such broadcasts, they could view it in their local 3D-capable theaters in the future.

Eventually, Sony could see 3D TV and 3D movies coming to the home, as users could view them recorded on the high-capacity Blu-ray disc format. Sony predicts it will be shipping home-focused 3D hardware in the summer of 2010. No release date or indication of pricing has been announced for the 21-inch OLED display prototype. It's another world...

Japans average broadband speed is up to 20 times faster than the average here in the US... and the suppliers here, instead of talking about fiber to the home, are looking to cap delivery over relatively slow cable and DSL services!
Most of us can only stare in awe at both the emerging and also the widely available technology and services they take for granted over there.
