Samsung 15in RGB LED LCD

Samsung is developing a very thin but color-accurate 15.6-inch display for notebooks, a rumor today suggests. Unspecified "market sources" for DigiTimes claim the screen will have an RGB LED backlight that will both contribute to the thin dimensions of future notebooks but also improve the color saturation versus other LED backlights, which are often dominated by blue and so reduce the improvement in green and red colors. RGB treats all three colors equally and can change color temperatures to create a much more vivid image.

What resolution it has and other more definitive specifications aren't mentioned; the 15.6-inch size is more common among 16:9 aspect ratio displays and suggest it may use a matching resolution, such as 1366x768, 1600x900 or 1920x1080.

How likely the display is to ship, and which companies will use it, also isn't defined. Samsung is said targeting shipments for the second half of the year, but the relative expense of the display will limit it to high-end thin-and-light notebooks rather than mainstream systems. Apple has been one of the quickest to embrace LED backlights across its line and emphasizes thin displays but has so far only been using 16:10 ratio widescreen displays on MacBooks Dell provides an RGB LED option for its 16-inch Studio XPS 16 notebooks but hasn't made wider use of the screens on its notebooks.
