Educational aluminum iMacs

Apple has announced new plans to offer 20-inch aluminum iMac systems to qualified educational institutions, according to AppleInsider. Schools previously could purchase the 17-inch white iMac. The new machines offer a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of memory, 160GB hard drive, 8x DVD burner and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics acceleration.

The plastic 17-inch variant was introduced in 2006, although the availability was recently limited to school purchases. While the public offerings switched to the 20- and 24-inch sizes, the less-expensive model was said to persist because of the economic recession.

The 20-inch aluminum iMacs are currently available to pre-order and will begin shipping to schools sometime next month.
