Nintendo trumpets high DSi sales, denies price cuts

updated 12:40 pm EDT, Thu April 9, 2009

Nintendo on DSi sales

The DSi gaming handheld has done very well in its post-Japanese launches, Nintendo claims. Despite having debuted in Europe and the US on April 5th, a Sunday, some 300,000 DSis were sold in the two regions during the first two days of availability. Nintendo has also revealed some of the non-gaming apps coming to the platform, which should include tour guides, museum maps and a coupon recorder.

The success will not however translate into price cuts on Nintendo systems, according to Nintendo management, even as Sony and Microsoft continue to slash at the PS3 and Xbox 360 in an attempt to undermine the Wii. The company has also repeated a lack of interest in building a cellphone, regardless of encroachment on its territory by the Apple iPhone. Although the DSi is better suited to gaming in terms of performance and interface, the iPhone offers a wider array of functions and a more convenient distribution system for software.
