Foxconn rumored making own e-book reader

Foxconn hires e-book staff

Foxconn Electronics, the manufacturer of Amazon's Kindle e-book reader lines, may be planning to develop its own e-book reader. According to a Thursday DigiTimes report pointing to industry sources, Foxconn has recently hired a few software technicians with e-book programming experience. Foxconn has not responded to inquiries regarding the report.

Such a move would be unusual, as Foxconn's production of its own devices are relatively limited. It would also pit the company against its own customer, although it's uncertain whether Foxconn would sell any reader under its own name or else pitch the design to other companies that would brand it with their own names.

The e-book reader market is heating up lately, as earlier today, book chainstore Barnes & Noble was reported to be developing its own and last week, wireless provider Verizon was rumored to be in talks with several unnamed manufacturers to provide its data service to deliver purchased books and other content.
