LG puts out W53 LCD with auto brightness

updated 09:30 am EDT, Mon April 6, 2009

LG today bolstered its LCD line with a new set of computer displays built both for eco-friendliness and movie-watching. The W53 SMART line replaces the W52 and now has an automatic brightness mode that will power down the backlight in a dark environment or turn it up in daylight. The move both cuts back on power use and reduces eyestrain in less than ideal viewing areas.

Just as automatic are optional reminders every hour to take breaks and a unique movie mode that blacks out all but an on-screen web video to reduce distractions. The controls are just as streamlined and only illuminate the buttons when the user's hand is close by.

Displays range in size from 18.5 to 27 inches and include models with 16:9 aspect ratios. LG hasn't provided full specifications but says all models over 21.5 inches can display 1080p. Dynamic contrast ratios range as high as 50,000:1 and are matched pixel response times as low as 2ms.

A worldwide launch for the W53 line is planned for April and should include the US. Prices and other details aren't mentioned and will likely vary by country.
