iTunes 8.1.1 enables HD movie rentals

updated 03:05 pm EDT, Mon April 6, 2009

iTunes 8.1.1 update

Apple has posted iTunes 8.1.1, a minor update to its music and video jukebox software. The patch does however enable desktop HD movie rentals, which were previously restricted to owners of the Apple TV. The change may make computers such as the Mac mini more viable as media center systems.

Also delivered in the update are miscellaneous bugfixes, such as a remedy to sync issues with the iPhone and iPod touch. Owners of the third-generation iPod shuffle should meanwhile find problems with VoiceOver speech synthesis resolved. Version 8.1.1 is a 66MB download.

    since when can .......

we even play HD iTunes videos let alone rent and try to play. If I am the only person that cannot play HD content on an Apple HD 30" Cinema Display using a late 2008 macbook pro with a mini display port to dual dvi adapter I will scream.

    Not on my MBP

Reading this I was hopeful I'd finally be able to rent movies in HD on my 2.4Ghz MBP, which I have connected to a 23" Cinema Display. No such luck - movies still show only the SD version and a note "Also available in HD on Apple TV"
    :(

Notice the article says "DESKTOPS" and "such as the Mac mini". It says nothing about laptops.
