LG to scale back notebook strategy, up smartphones

LG scales back notebooks

Due to changing consumer demand and the weak economy, LG has relaxed its plans regarding notebook and smaller netbook PCs will, says a Wednesday MobileToday report. Instead, LG will focus on growing its successful smartphone market, including its QWERTY keyboard-equipped and touchscreen handsets. To this end, its future handsets due for a release later in 2009 will either be thinner, more advanced with higher quality cameras and more memory, or basic to meet lower price points. To appeal to a wider audience, they will also sell the handsets in a selection of colors.

In the UK, LG has enjoyed great success with its KP500 touchscreen handset. Also known as the Cookie, it's one of LG's least expensive touchscreen devices. Its KS360 QWERTY phone has also been selling well on pre-paid plans.

LG has apparently overestimated the size of the portable PC market but is likely to revisit its notebook strategy next year. The Korean company has recently launched its X120 10-inch netbooks.
