T-Mobile unveils its first 3G modem

updated 09:15 am EDT, Wed March 25, 2009

T-Mobile webConnect 3G

T-Mobile on Wednesday unveiled the webConnect USB Laptop Stick, the company's first-ever 3G networking adapter. The peripheral supports the faster downloads of HSDPA on the carrier's 1,700MHz networks and also includes its own 802.11g Wi-Fi connection for those few notebooks that don't support the standard. It can likewise connect to EDGE and GPRS both within the US and on international networks that support the slower standards.

The stick also has a microSD slot for up to 8GB of storage and a swiveling USB connector to fit the modem into tight spaces. T-Mobile initially supports Windows XP and Vista systems but promises free Mac support through downloadable drivers soon. The webConnect stick should be available today and costs $50 when attached to a 5GB data plan or $250 by itself.

    not the first

It may be the first - but T-Mobile have had USB modems for a while internationally. Nothing seems to be particularly unique about its abilities either - US frequencies aside.
