AT&T claiming new, faster iPhone in mid-June?

updated 02:05 pm EDT, Mon March 23, 2009

ATT on New iPhone

AT&T has reportedly made statements supporting a new, faster iPhone in the June timeframe. Citing one or more unnamed executives at the provider as "100% confirmed" sources, BGR hears the new iPhone will be unveiled "around mid-June" and that speed should be a particular focus. It's suggested that this may include (but wouldn't be limited to) AT&T's planned 7.2Mbps 3G upgrades that should roughly double the theoretical peak download speed on AT&T's network.

Apple may also close the gap in terms of hardware features, according to the tips. Without going into details, the officials have reportedly said that the 'gap in capability' between iPhones and some rival designs should be taken care of with the new device. What these are is unclear; many anticipate an upgraded camera with possible video capture features, though the description may also allude to expected iPhone OS 3.0 features like copy-and-paste text as well as MMS.

A U-verse app is said in development that would let iPhone owners control the DVR for AT&T's IPTV service, including basic remote control functions.

The apparent insider also claims AT&T has said it will start offering a regularly available, $99 subsidized netbook with 3G but that it won't run Windows. This is unlikely to include Apple given the company's approach to the devices; however, Dell regularly offers Ubuntu Linux on its least expensive netbooks and is the most likely candidate for such a deal.

What would get me to buy

Video capture would get me to upgrade my 3G phone. More storage or faster network would not.

    Another perspective...

More storage or faster network would get me to upgrade my 3G phone. Video capture would not.

    more flexible plans

Any kind of hardware upgrade would prompt me to go for the new device. The web is poky at best even on WiFi. What would be better though, is a more flexible plan or combination of plans, esp. if they were cheaper.

The current iPhone is still good so the minute the new one comes out people are going to be giving the old one to their wives, husbands, kids, etc. but if each person has to sign up on a separate account and pay 30 to 40 a month for data even though they are not likely to ever use it, that would be a real tragedy. Give me a plan where I can pass on my current iphone to a significant other without being robbed, and I will buy the new one for sure.
