Acer issues recall for overheating Predator PCs

updated 04:45 pm EDT, Fri March 20, 2009

Acer recalls Predator PC

Two reported cases of melting internal components and external cases due to a short circuit in the Predator gaming PC have prompted its manufacturer, Acer, to issue a voluntary recall on Thursday. As many as approximately 215 examples of the PC, launched in the US this past fall, are potentially affected, and they were produced between May and December of 2008. There were no reported injuries in either of the overheating cases, Acer says.

The reason for the overheating is a problem with the Predator's internal wiring, which can "become bent or stripped," Acer says, making them overheat. Those who bought a Predator PC during the specified time period should visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission listing for this case for more information, or Acer itself for a free repair.
