Apple posts Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter update

updated 11:25 am EDT, Tue March 17, 2009

Mini DisplayPort update

Using Software Update, Apple has begun distributing a firmware upgrade for users of the Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter. The software is said to address problems Macs have had with the adapter, in which video will flicker or go completely blank during use. Difficulties began roughly around the launch of the first unibody MacBook Pro on October 14th.

Similar issues are said to be affecting other recent systems, including even the latest Mac mini, developed while the adapter errors were already recognized. The firmware update is an 11.2MB file, and described as upgrading software on the adapter itself, rather than the Mac it is initially downloaded to. Patching is triggered when the adapter is detected.

    Wow.

There is firmware INSIDE the adaptor? That's crazy.

    No problems here

I got one of the new Minis with this adapter and have had no problems using it with a Dell monitor. Oh well...update your little heart out.

    So....

it took apple 6 months to figure this problem out?

And we're supposed to be embracing this whole DisplayPort switchover?

    Returned Mac mini

I purchased a new mac-mini, and could not hook it up to my TV (not VGA, obviously, VIDEO). It did not work.

Hopefully, a fix is in the works for this adapter as well.
