Kogan Agora netbook specs

A look at a pre-production version of Australia's Kogan Agora netbook was made possible on Thursday, revealing its specs as company founder Ruslan Kogan demonstrated a couple of the models at the offices of PC Authority. The 10-inch netbooks, first announced at the end of February, ran on both gOS Linux and Windows 7, with black and white examples shown, even though the final version will be sold only in black. The CPU will be Intel's 1.6GHz Atom N270, while the hard drive has a 160GB capacity, both netbook staples.

Otherwise, the 10.2-inch screen sports 1024x600 resolution and the netbook has three USB ports, a 10/100 Ethernet port and a 1.3-megapixel camera. A 4-in-1 card reader is integrated. There is no 3G module slot, though Kogan said later models may include it if the original product is successful.

PC Authority's hands-on impressions have netbook performing well, with a large keyboard, estimated at 92 percent of a full-sized notebooks thanks to the 12-inch sized chassis. The staff also noted styling on the final model will be slightly different, with a texture pattern instead of the swoosh seen in the photos.

Pre-loaded software on the gOS version will include Skype, OpenOffice, Firefox and a number of Google Apps. Ubuntu compatibility lets users download more free apps. Load times on the applications tested were fairly quick as well, with OpenOffice opening from the dock in about 30 seconds.

The base Agora netbook with a 3-cell battery is expected to be released early in April, priced at the equivalent of $322 in Australia. A model with 2GB of RAM, a six-cell battery and a Bluetooth mini-dongle will cost about $353. The Bluetooth dongle is a stand-alone option on the entry-level Agora for just $6.
