Rumor: Apple bringing MMS, tethering to iPhone 3.0 OS

updated 02:30 pm EDT, Thu March 12, 2009

iPhone OS rumors

The upcoming iPhone operating system, version 3.0, could add several long-awaited features such as MMS messaging support and tethering, unnamed sources have told the Boy Genius Report. Although the multimedia message format is relatively commonplace, enabling video and image transfers between phones, Apple so far has excluded the technology from its handset and forced users to download third-party apps as a work-around.

The tethering function allegedly will work via Bluetooth, pairing the phone with a USB device attached to a computer. The service would allow the iPhone to serve as the primary Internet device for a notebook or even desktop system. Previous rumors suggested AT&T will offer a new contract for the function, potentially charging subscribers for tethered data usage despite the unlimited on-device browsing.

Apple has scheduled a special event for March 17th that will preview the iPhone 3.0 firmware. Separate reports suggest the update could offer true background processes, instead of push notification, or vector-based GPS positioning. Both functions had been included in early betas of iPhone 2.1, but excluded from the subsequent public release.

    MMS only if it's free.

I don't pay for a high price texting plan. I don't want to pay if some idiot friend sends me c*** just because HE has a $180/year texting option.

Add MMS all you want, as long as I can block it and avoid rip-off charges that should be charged to the sender alone.

    With a USB device?

That has to be the biggest joke of the century!
Who in the WORLD would put a new power using device in the USB port when there is BT build into every single Mac out there?

Unless that USB dongle is for Windows of course.. ;-)

    Yes, Dvorak

Yes! A Dvorak keyboard lay-out would be superb. I'm not holding my breath though.
