Rumored Apple netbook to get 10in screen?

updated 08:10 am EDT, Tue March 10, 2009

Apple Netbook 10in Rumor

The purported Apple touchscreen netbook has gained a minor amount of corroboration on Tuesday from sources of Dow Jones. The trading outlet echoes the earlier claims that Wintek is producing a touchscreen for an Apple computer assembled by Quanta but adds that the screen will measure between 9.7 and 10 inches diagonal, or roughly in line with existing netbook sizes. Other details are still "under evaluation," according to the unnamed sources behind the reported leak.

The system would potentially appear in the second half of 2009, again supporting earlier reports of a summer shipping window, though it's implied the design may appear later if necessary.

Such a size wouldn't support longstanding claims regarding a possible Apple tablet, which while still unconfirmed has been described as significantly smaller. It would also downplay the likelihood of the larger system running an upscaled version of OS X iPhone instead of a more touch-friendly version of Mac OS X.

Dow Jones is reporting from the same 'sources' as someone else, and that becomes corroboration?

Again with the netbooks? And from a far-removed source? Dude. Wishing and hoping isn't going to get you what you want.

As for the plausibility of such a product from Apple, why would they try and cannibalize their current net-centric devices of the iPodTouch and iPhone?

the only netbook i see coming from apple is one powered by the iphone or ipod touch. Insert ipod/iphone into slot, thus providing a screen and keyboards to device, perhaps with a GUI desktop to boot only in that mode.

    Why do they keep showing

some clamshell model, when they're clearly stating the Apple netbook would have a touchscreen? They think it's going to look like a traditional netbook with a keyboard? If Apple were to build a touchscreen netbook, I'm sure there would be no traditional keyboard. It might have a folding cover but the touch display would undoubtedly be where the keys would normally be.

a docking station for the iphone? that is so nineties, and the Touch/iPhone is to low powered for this.

A bigger iPod would be the smart move, cheap and extra revenue from the appstore.

    I'd buy it.

That would be able to replace the 9" Mac SE/30 on my coffee table for sure! ;-)

At first I thought I really would buy an Apple cBook (clamBook) ... but really want a confederated iPhone/iPod/surfer/games/GPS. I think this basically means I want an iPhone with a slightly larger screen and the ability to use landscape keyboard in everything and not just Safari (Why the heck don't they support this already?).

Apple, you'll go broke trying to bet on what they'll do next...

I guess I'll be seeing a plethora of netbook rumors for some time to come on these sites....

    I Want one BUT...

The idea of having a Mac Tablet has always been the Holy Grail that I've been waiting for since I was at Apple 15 years ago. SInce then I've embarked on alot of nutty ways to do it. In 2007 at MacWorld I saw the Axiotron ModBook for the first time, and made the purchase of it on the spot. Little did I know that it would be another year plus that I would get the delivery of it. I have it now since Feb 2008, and I can tell you it was worth the wait. BUT, as with any new product it had a share of problems. some liveable some not. I use it a whole lot, but it's really to heavy to hold for a long time, and gets darn hot to hold. I use it every day for my photo work with the stylus, but the onscreen keyboard stinks, and it took them another 15 months to offer a BlueTooth fix.

As for a NetBook, well I can say this...I have a Dell Mini9 running OSX 10.5.6 and it works fantastic, but to be honest the keyboard is way to small to do much typing on unless you have the "Hunt and Peck" method down just right. The screen is real nice too, and just for fun I did this to see how easy it really was to do. The down side is, it's really just to small to consider using every day. I could see this fitting in a market where students would use it, or the traveler as I was for 40 weeks a year on planes wanting to lighten the load.

I will end with this thought, if Apple pulls this off the right way the device will have a finger touch keyboard, and a stylus. if it's one or the other, it's just not going to be very useful at all. I do know if and when Apple does this, it will be unbelievable at the least and change the world again all over.
