Windows Mobile app store just a website?

updated 10:50 am EDT, Mon March 9, 2009

Win Mobile Market Slip

Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile may be no more than a website, a new discovery seemingly confirms. A placeholder page shows a cellphone-sized teaser promising that the Windows Mobile software store is "coming soon" to that location. The posting suggests that Microsoft's promised accessibility through the desktop web and pre-6.5 versions of Windows Mobile will be accomplished by requiring that every user access a website instead of a native app.

While using the web would give Microsoft a level of portability not possible through most other centralized portals, the feature would also limit the Marketplace's ability to compete against the iPhone App Store, BlackBerry App World and other stores that have dedicated clients. Microsoft's store theoretically prevents it from allowing more than one download at once on a smartphone, background downloading or for on-the-fly software updates.

Microsoft has primarily positioned the Marketplace as an alternative to existing third-party store options on Windows Mobile, like Handango or carrier-run stores, rather than as a direct competitor. [via Pocketnow]

    Who says?

No it doesn't. It's a Microsoft web site. They can, and probably will, get all sorts of that kind of functionality from an ActiveX plug-in.

    No ActiveX

Pocket IE doesn't support ActiveX. Thank god, otherwise we'd be seeing people with their iPaqs and Palm Ws getting infected by viruses, just like desktop Windows.

On the other hand, there's no reason Microsoft couldn't provide a download accelerator as a helper application, the way Amazon does, and make it a free download from the app store.

    huh?

How does the web site prevent installing more than one at a time, but an app would allow it?

And is there any reason they couldn't do both? Apple does this. They have an app for the iphone, and itunes for the computer.

And while you 'can' with Apple's store, on the iPhone/ipod, when you select an app, Apple so helpfully takes you to the home page so you can see the progress bar of it downloading. Wow, the excitement.

    Quality already poor

You’d think they could have gotten “phone” to not drop to the second line, or at least indent it to make it look better.

The site isn’t even up yet and you can already see the difference in quality between the Apple and Microsoft. It is the attention that Apple puts into every detail of the user experience that makes the users loyal. It looks like they did the site in Word and saved as HTML. And yes I know it is a placeholder site, but when you go through the effort to put one up early to generate "buzz" you'd think you'd make the effort to make it look better than something a new temp might crank out right before lunch.

    ?

Why can't this be a placeholder page for a place where users will be able to download the Store application? I.e. current winmo phone users that want the app store application.
