Nokia denies Verizon rumor

Nokia has denied rumors claiming it had established a deal with Verizon to introduce a 4G touchscreen device, according to Engadget. Anonymous sources suggested the two companies were collaborating on a device that would provide 4G Internet access via Verizon's upcoming LTE network. The service is scheduled to begin operation sometime early in 2010, with current speeds reaching 60Mbps.

"While we have not entered into any exclusive agreement for 4G touch screen device development as is being reported, we will continue to follow and pursue developments as a normal course of business," a statement read. The company stopped short of explicitly denying any ongoing talks or negotiations with the carrier, however.

Despite downplaying the Verizon claims, Nokia last week presented a roadmap outlining future plans for technology development. The company aims to be one of the first manufacturers to release 4G devices supporting the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard, with the first handsets to arrive early in 2010.

Nokia also clarified its stance on WiMAX, amid speculation that the handset-maker could be dumping the standard in favor of LTE. The company claims the discontinuation of the N810 WiMAX tablet "does not apply to other WiMAX business development efforts that Nokia is involved in."
