Motorola intros MC55 EDAs

Motorola on Monday announced the upcoming North American release of its MC55 Enterprise Digital Assistants (EDAs). The devices act as cellphones, two-way radios, bar code scanners, digital cameras, and mobile computers in the same device and are meant to alleviate the need for more than one device. The pair feature 3.5-inch, 320x240 resolution displays and are differentiated by the inclusion of wide-area wireless data in the MC5574 while the MC5590 makes do with an Ethernet port and a Wi-Fi connection for accessing the Internet on local networks.

The MC5590 also relies on a number pad for phyiscal keys where the MC5574 has a full QWERTY keyboard.

Both support GSM/GPRS/EDGE voice and data networks and have an integrated GPS sensor that can provide driving instructions, real-time location of other vehicles, geo-fencing to create GPS barriers as well as leaving breadcrumbs along the route.

The EDAs have push-to-tTalk (PTT) capabilities thanks to VoIP, and can act as soft phone clients and integrate with installed Internet phone exchanges. Bluetooth is shared by both devices as well. A 520MHz Marvell CPU provides processing power to run Windows Mobile 6.1 smoothly. They also have optional 2-megapixel cameras and the choice of a 1D laser scanner or a 2D imager.

While prices have not been announced, the MC5574 is now available in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and the Asia Pacific region, with global and North American markets expected to be added in the spring.
