Pretec SDXC and CF Card

Pretec has used CeBIT to launch two flash memory cards that are each claimed as record setters. The company's 32GB SDXC card is the first in the world to be announced using the new SDXC format; although it doesn't push past the 32GB limit of SDHC, it transfers data more quickly than large-capacity SDHC cards and reaches up to 50MB per second.

The card hasn't immediately been given a ship date and will depend heavily on the launch of SDXC-compatible cameras and other devices that recognize the exFAT file system used for the new storage. A 64GB SDXC card is also in the works and should be unveiled in the second half of the year.

A more conventional offering comes in the form of what's billed as the world's fastest CompactFlash card. Rated at an unusual 666X, the new example transfers data at a full 100MB per second and is fast enough to keep up with even higher-resolution DSLRs. Pretec boasts that the card is likely to be one of the fastest released before the CFast standard takes over as its speed is approaching the 133MB per second theoretical peak of the CF standard.

The company's high-speed card is housed in sturdier metal and should come in capacities between 4GB and 64GB. Pretec expects to start sampling the cards in April but doesn't say when this will translate to mass production.
