Palm Pre internally delayed?

Palm Pre Delayed Rumor

Palm's flagship Pre may be delayed at least within the company. A claimed design engineer source speaking to TinyComb says the phone is "officially" delayed but doesn't say whether this will involve any delays in the public launch schedule. Palm has always remained conservative with its release schedule and has said only that it plans to launch the phone in the first half of the year, though informal leaks have hinted a possible June release.

Reasons for the delay are just as unknown, though the phone is the first to use Palm's new webOS and is also the first phone from Palm to depend almost exclusively on a touchscreen for input. The Centro and Treo lines have regularly had touchscreens but regularly include directional pads and shortcut buttons. At press events, Palm has never officially allowed the media to try the phone itself and instead conducts guided tours.

In response to the rumor, Palm has maintained that the Pre is "on track" for its original launch window but hasn't directly addressed the accuracy of the claim.

Any delay would be potentially dangerous for Palm, which has warned of a drop in revenue as prospective buyers hold off on buying existing phones until the Pre is available. The pre-summer launch is also critical to preempting Apple as most now expect an upgraded iPhone in June or early summer, which could cannibalize Pre sales.

    waiting for iPhone

I would imagine Palm wants to know as much as possible about when Apple is releasing the next iPhone before they launch the Pre. They may also be trying to control the level of hype being generated from internal sources.

    What good what it do

for Palm to concern themselves about what Apple is releasing. They wouldn't be able to make any modifications to the Pre. Offer lower prices? Hardly. Palm can't afford to be giving the Pre away. They'd better that Pre out the door as soon as possible and not have sales overlapping iPhone 3 sales. I think Palm did a good job with the Pre and they should go with it as it is. They'll get a lot of ex-WinMo users and ex-Palm Treo users for sure.

    Only if it's ready

Palm's gotten some great initial responses to the Pre. Given Palm's dimmed popularity I think it would be in their best interest to make sure the Pre everything they want it to be. RIM's touch screen entry may not have been completely ready, ie rushed to market for the holiday season, they have a solid base/reputation in the cell phone market and could weather any negatives of a slightly glitchy OS (if these early stories were even true). A similar glitch for Palm on the other hand could seriously damage its success. You have to remember, Palm was/is in trouble and is only still around as "Palm" b/c it was thrown a life-line. It's not just the the success of the Pre and it's new OS that could fail, it's the company that could go under if poorly executed. I want to see this phone succeed as this is one of the few mobile OSs that actually has some innovative and original design. I'm surprised to say this of Palm, but it's devises and companies like this that'll keep advancing mobile device technology forward.

    Re: waiting for...

Yes, that's what they're doing. Sitting around going "Do you know what Apple's doing yet?". Only to do what? Announce they'll be holding up the Pre for 6 months while they add in some new stuff? Or 'pre-announce' they'll be adding me-too stuff later on.

    Yeah, that's what their doing.

Of course what is probably delaying them is just a bunch of arguing over whether to include copy/paste technology. Sure, it would be useful. But apple has plainly stated that it is of no consequence. So why include it?

Why don't company's just keep all future products a secret like Apple? Then nobody will ever know if it is delayed.

    Re: Hmmmm

No, they'll just complain that they haven't released an update in like forever. As in "Waaaa! Apple, when are you going to update the mini!!! Waaaah!"

And Apple has been less secretive of late with the iPhone. But they screwed themselves over (three times) by putting a time frame on Leopard, then having to move it due to the iPhone being behind schedule. (the third time is the release of leopard, which was rushed because they said it would be out in the fall....)
