Nokia responds to 5800's 3G issue in select areas

Nokia 5800 issues update

The recent 3G performance problems with the 5800 XpressMusic have been officially acknowledged by Nokia, and while the company has stopped short of admitting a network-specific problem, it now claims that only handsets in Chicago and New York areas suffer the problems. The handsets were being returned to Nokia's flagship stores in the two cities, with some users reporting a complete lack of signal reception even in areas with a known good connection.

"This is a very isolated problem concerning only the North American market and is not specific to any other region or country," Nokia reportedly said in a response from a NokiaBlog report. The company specifically narrows it down to the two major cities, with devices operating in Dallas, Miami and other areas working properly. It's not clear, however, if anything in the device's behavior affects the connection or if it's instead issues specific to AT&T's 3G network. The carrier has in recent months been singled out for spotty reception in New York for both the Apple iPhone and BlackBerry Bold.

Regardless, Nokia says it plans to investigate the possibility of a more immediate fix than changes to the network.

"We are currently investigating the matter further to find a quick remedy to the situation," Nokia adds.
