FCC filing for AirPort

FCC filings indicate that Apple is set to release updated versions of its Time Capsule and AirPort Express 802.11n devices, according to AppleInsider. Testing documents show that the wireless routers could support simultaneous communication on the 2.4 GHz band and the 5 GHz band. The expanded capabilities would allow the base stations to work with 802.11b/g devices, such as the iPhone, while sending 802.11n signals to a computer or set-top box.

The relatively low-interference 5 GHz band can be used solely for high-bandwidth applications such as HD video streaming, while e-mail or Internet browsing can be off-loaded to the 2.4 GHz band. Current AirPort models support either the 802.11b/g standards or 802.11n, but not both at the same time.

Other than the wireless features, additional details of the updated Time Capsule remain unknown.

Availability of AirPort Extremes in Europe has diminished over the past two to three weeks, while an AppleInsider blog referenced rumors of six new Apple product numbers in the inventory systems of international resellers. Amazon also cut its prices on the Time Capsules, adding to the evidence of an imminent refresh. Additionally, Apple has been known to release new products within a week of their respective FCC authorizations.

The current Airport hardware can support both 802.11B/G and N concurrently, despite what your article says. It cannot however operate in "dual band" mode, where it uses both 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time.
